The Armatta gallery is a contemporary photography gallery in Montreal profiling the artistry of Canadian emerging works. The gallery is privately owned and curated by Robert Armatta who has worked as an art director for more than 15 years. It was in this discipline where he honed his appreciation and selection of photography both as a design element and as pure fine art. Encouraging emerging artists to exhibit their first solo exhibits, Armatta invites the selected artists to exhibit free of charge and any profits are divided in favour of the artist.

It is a gallery with a long tradition and history. Lucienne and Louis Lange founded L'Art Francais (this was the initial name of the gallery) in 1934, and until 1986, it was located on avenue Laurier in Montreal. In 1975, Jean-Pierre Valentin bought the gallery from Madame Lange and continued the tradition to show works of well-established and emerging artists. The gallery has works of Ozias Leduc, John Little, Stanley Cosgrove, Goodridge Roberts, Marc-Aurele Fortin Miyuki Tanobe, Elene Gamache, Genevieve Jost, Christian Deberdt etc.  Today the gallery represents mostly Canadian artists. In 1986, Gallery Jean-Pierre Valentin moved the gallery to Sherbrooke Street, near the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Galerie David Astrof

David Astrof Fine Arts, located at McGill University's Thomson House has a collection of more than 150 pieces of artwork created by contemporary Canadian artists such as Kay Aubanel, Victoria Block, Julie Desmarais, Harvey Horowitz, Robert Olding.

Galerie de l'Isle

Established in 1983 by Alain Moncade. Many of its painters are represented in the greatest galleries of the world.

Lamoureux Ritzenhoff

Lamoureux Ritzenhoff Gallery has two locations: one in Downtown, west of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in the prestigious Golden Square Mile on Sherbrooke Street West; and the other is in the very heart of gallery district in Old Montreal on St.Paul Street West.

 

Lamoureux Ritzenhoff Gallery represents some of the best Canadian contemporary artists. Gallery's list of artists represented includes mostly mid-career artists, a few younger outstanding artists and some internationally recognized Canadian figures and masters. At all time, the gallery shows a special exhibition of selected traditional Canadian masters pieces. The gallery organizes two major solo exhibitions every year: one in the Spring and an other one in Autumn. The gallery also exports original works worldwide. Lamoureux Ritzenhoff's contemporary artist exhibition shows some larger size works which feel at home in its 13 feet high ceiling location in Old Montreal.

The Shayne Gallery represents over 50 painters from Canada and around the world. It was created in 1972 in the Shayne's Grosvenor Avenue to support the paintings and masks executed by Jovette Marchessault, whose creative skills have blossomed into an international renown as a playwright and author. In 1975 the Gallery moved into its present location.

We're spending the Memorial Day weekend in Montréal. It's a great city for many reasons, in particular because of its focus and devotion to art. It even permeates its Métro.

We spent quite some time in Vieux-Montréal (Old Montreal) on a beautiful cobblestone street, Rue St-Paul. There were more commercial art galleries jamming into four blocks than I've seen even in Boston or Cambridge.
