Openness is a common strategy of church survival. Many churches have taken open stands on homosexuality and other social issues traditionally scorned upon by the institution. There has also been openness to new financial models, one of which is to offer up underused churches as multidenominational worship spaces and community centres, with local governments taking on some of the cost of maintenance and renovations, in exchange for a new, categorically ‘public' space.
